Sharing the details of a new survey conducted online within the U.S. by The Harris Poll on behalf of nationwide progressive group Action Together Network (ATN) from Jan. 4-6, 2022 among 595 adults ages 18 and older who identified as “left-leaning.” Of left-leaning Americans, 35% of those would define themselves as “Democrat,” 21% as “liberal,” 17% as “moderate,” 15% as “independent,” 6% as “progressive,” 3% as “Socialist,” and 2% “other,” if defining themselves politically with only one word.
ATN executive director/co-founder Andrea Catone, a sociologist who has spent 20 years building and studying progressive movement networks, says, “Left-leaning Americans are ideologically diverse, and the Democratic Party needs to ensure its messaging reaches everyone holding progressive values. We elect progressive candidates by complementing each other’s work. Paid, unpaid and underpaid progressive organizers put in more than 100 million hours of critical work between the 2016 and 2020 elections, helped put Biden in office and will play a key role in the midterms.”
ATN senior advisor Niq Johnson, Ph.D. (they/them), a Black social impact strategist with 20 years of experience in community initiatives and social justice networks, adds, “Progressive groups have a tremendous amount of influence and power to shape public interest in civic engagement. The movement is much bigger, broader and deeper than people think. Millions of organizers focus on voter registration, fundraising, getting out the vote and much more. Organizers build trust and relationships and combat disinformation in local communities, critical to elections up and down the ballot.”
